Information Retention

I teach an introductory course to future medical proffesionals. It is extremely challenging to come up with creative ways to help my students retain the information needed to be successful in the more advanced courses

William,
One is what was covered in the previous post and that is have students develop commercials that cover key concepts. Other ways is to connect the concepts to real world applications. Share a concept with them and then have them go out into the community and find how the concept is applied and or used. The more connections you can create between the content and application the higher the retention rate is going to be. Also, I use a lot of repetition in my teaching so we do short intense drills over material as we start and close the class.

What are some of the tips that you use for retention?
That is one of my challenges, is to get students to retain things.

Candace,
Review and repetition are two learning tools that are very successful. You are using both in getting your students to recall what they have been taught and need to remember.

I too work on giving my students tips to help them remember what the lesson is about. I have them focus on key words in the the statements to help them understand as well as remember the information come test time.

Bee,
You are using repeated reinforcement with this approach and that is critical in the learning process. By using different delivery modes your students get to see the content from different angles and this really helps with their knowledge retention.

If there is a subject mater that I want the students remember I frist talk about the subject, then write it on the board, think of an picture example and draw it, and then tell a life experience example about it. Also try to make it fun at the same time.

I try to give my students retention tips to aid in remembering and concentration.

Paul,
You make a key point. There has to be a connection, meaning the students sees personal value to the content he/she is being taught. When this type of connection is made then ROI becomes a part of the outcome for students.

I too have a similar problem. I constantly encourage my student to use note taking methods that make connections in THEIR minds and not just copy what I write down what I write on the board, but make it mean something to them.
