LEARN BY SEEING

visual learning is significantly increase long-term retention and make learning more understanding.

Steve,
Right you are. I think this is also one of the fun parts of teaching because each class I teach is like a treasure hunt since I am looking for instructional methods that I can use to engage my students. Some work and some don't but it is for sure I have learned from trying each one.

Students learn in a variety of ways. The tricky part as educators is to identify what works and what doesn't for each student and make sure we cater to those styles.

Kaitlin,
I support your belief in using multiple senses to connect with students. The retention and application of content is much higher when students get to use more than one sense or learning preference to acquire the content or skill.

I believe that the best long-term retention comes from a mixture of all the senses. As a student, I remember how easy it was to zone out on a teacher. I feel that what worked best for me was rewriting my notes. I am a strong believer in using as many senses as possible to engage students in the learning process.

Corliss,
The more senses used the more learning that will occur. Good point.

Most student learn best by seeking. Seeing also increase long ang short memory ,and help to student to better acheive their goals.

Students will retain skills better if they can hear it, touch it, and then perform it.

Linda,
As EMTs your students will be immersed in so many different situations that require the use of their senses to read situations and provide support to individuals in need. The more you can help them to incorporate their senses in the learning process the better prepared they will be when they are in the field.

Students really do learn from using their senses. Concepts that are learned through a hearing, seeing, and doing approach are retain much longer than information approached through only one sense. Our EMT classes use this hear, see, do approach for teaching skills. In addition, this approach not only teaches the skill but increases cognitive understanding of the topic.

Marilyn,
This has been my experience as well.

I agree 100%--I find with any situation that visual aides will help with understanding and remembering the information

James,
Seeing it, tasting it, smelling it and doing it really helps students to use their senses and learning preferences. The more we can help the to see relevance and application the more engaged they are going to be.

Yes, and how true!
In my career as a chef instructor the cooking "demo" is as important or more important than the written material. Students can see and then apply what they have learned. The best part is they get to eat their home work!

Mignonne,
Good way to engage students and get them thinking about how they learn best. The more senses they use the more engaged they will be.

Many students are not yet familiar with which learning method works for them, therefore I like to apply as many senses during my lessons, so that every one can acquire their own level of comfort in learning styles.

Gay,
Good point. Simple things like color greatly enhance the learning process for students. They take very little if any preparation yet yield big results in terms of understanding.

I'm finding this subject reminds me of a course that talked about the use of colors to enhance learning. When I am teachig a subject that is mostly semantic material, I use colored markers on the white board to separate and categorize information that's reated. It certainly brightens up the classroom, and I think it makes the info more visually memorable.

Jeffrey,
Visual learning is powerful as you mention. The more senses we can incorporate into our instructional delivery the higher the content retention is going to be.

Seeing has a massive impact on peoples memory and I always involve a lot of video, graphics and drama in my instruction.
