From concrete to abstract
This is something that I do with my students on a daily basis. To have them hear an audio effect (Reverb, Delays, compression, gating) and build that concrete memory helps them to picture that effect on other pieces of audio thru abstract memory.

Yes it does. It is fun as an instructor to work in both of these areas because you can see the progress that you are helping your students achieve. They in turn start to see how they are developing into reflective thinkers and problem solvers.

This is a good model to follow as you have already observed. Through repetition and reinforcement you are giving them the foundation they need to build into the creative aspects of the field.
