WE such a diverse population in the GE-100 sections I utilize a variety of techniques: Open discussion, group forums, one-on one. Every adult learns in a different style so it is imperative to change or teaching styles and not simply read and recite

Glennda,
Yes, they do and I am always amazed at the diversity of experience they bring into class. As an instructor I get to learn as much from students as they from me.

This is one of the most rewarding aspects of teaching adults. They have interesting life experiences that can add to the discussion and course content.

Maria Estela,
Like this group paced learning approach. They are controlling their progress in the review but also are able to spend time on areas that need some addition discussion. This helps them to demonstrate they are in charge of their own learning and I know that is appreciated.

Now that my studenys are in the final stage of their learning, Im giving them a review for the board examination. Some students appeared to be bored and tired, so what I do is let them engage in a discussion and I just do some clarifications if necessary. If a topic is well understood we fast foreward and if there is a controversy, I encourage them to give their opinion based on references.

Denise,
You and your co-teacher are doing a great service for your students by talking them through their concerns and worries. Once they realize they have more to offer than they think they do you can build on this knowledge and get them settled into the course where they will start to make contributions.

It is true first term students are so overwhelmed in the beginning that it is hard for them to relax a little and realize they do have experiences to contribute and apply to the course content. My co-teacher and myself do have a lot of dialogue with these students regarding ways of learning how to focus on important information, review and test more effectively.

I find that sharing some of our personal experiences helps the students to understand that we as instructors go through difficulities in life. It allows the student to see us as equals.

Nicole,
Good point and one we need to remind our students about as they come into our classes.

Exactly I agree, students do not have to leave everything at the door when they arrive. Just the negatives, the positives and strengths are an asset to their learning and career field.

Robert,
You make a key point that many students seem to overlook. They do have life experiences that may be valuable to them in the class if they are willing to stop and reflect on what they know and how they can use their life experiences to enhance their learning.

Steve,
Change of pace and variety in instructional delivery is how we are going to be able to engage diverse student populations. You have the right strategy going in your courses. Keep up the good work.

Our students come from all differnt walks in life, with varying life experience. One of the main ideas I try to get across to the students, do not check your common sense and life experience at the door. Use that knowledge to help you in school and the career you are about to begin.
