Injecting creativity into structured learning

What are some ways to inject creativity into structured learning. The Military is a hugh organization and decision makers must rely on structured problem solving procedures. But they must also integrate abstract concepts in order to respond to the unexpected or new environments. How can an instructor inject creativity into structured problem solving?

David,
Good way to make their learning relevant as well as applicable to their own lives. As you say this makes their learning come alive.

When instructing manual driveline I put a unique spin on the subject by telling the students they will need to also learn to be a good test driver. So as we discuss the components, their wear and failure I ask them how would they test drive the vehicle to evaluate the components operation. This becomes a good classroom discussion.

Hi Fred,
Good point. This is why we need to encourage the students to acquire a solid foundation in the field and then they can integrate their creativity into fundamentals to solve problems or create products.

Creativity is subjective, the learners are always welcome to produce their versions of creations. The openness to find quality is key in the learning process.

I like the idea of more adding steps for each problem to better help the students problem solve.

i agree with the previous comment. life is all about creativity, of a learning process from the past, present and guidelnes into the future.

Hi Homer,
One of the ways I do it is to add something to the problem solving situation. The students learn the trouble shooting steps and then I have them work through a situation where after 2-3 steps they need to be creative in solving the problem which enables them to go onto the next step. This way they stay with structured problem solving but they are being creative within the confines of the steps.
