People just know different things....
I know many professional trades people that are extremely intelligent but are not thought of that way because they did not attend university.
I am happy that this chapter brought this idea into discussion. I can't quote it directly, but I enjoyed it when it mentioned that it takes intelligence to make a toilet flush.
Eric,
Good example about how task development is to be valued and we need to appreciate those that have acquired those skills and are willing to help others acquire them as well.

Kind of reminds me of the TV show "Undercover Boss" The CEO of the company can never properly perform the tasks of the employees that work for him.
Peggy,
Well said and so true.

I think if all human beings would realize that we all are worth while, and due to our differnces in intellect, have something to contribute to society. If we would all build on that....oh the places we could go.
Mike,
You are sharing common sense which seems to be lacking today. Using the mental abilities you have in relation to hard work and success will come. I come from a very humble background in terms of opportunities but through hard work I have been able to achieve success or at least success as I define it. I get to work in a field I love sharing the knowledge I have about the field and every month I get a paycheck. This is as good as it gets!

Coming from the same back ground I strongly agree. One of my old sayings, "after the first fifty or sixty it's easy" Being the smartest, piece of paper that say's so or not, does not ensure success. More often success goes to the one that tries the hardest.
Students that learn in different ways using different tools for learning can problem solve easyer. People that depend on one learning method will have trouble addapting in a problem solving work environment.
Pietro,
Spoken like a dedicated professional. The light bulb of learning when observed in students keeps us coming back day after day.
Gary
This is my favorite part of any day when the student connects or the light goes on and or their passion just comes ripping out. Personally I feed off their passion of what we do in class. There is a lot going on in class when that happens. The learning goes to a new level, student own what they learn and do.
Best regards,
Pete
In todays struggling job market the individual with the degree or certificate will most likely be hired over those without. It is important to stress that although you may have the paper to back your education you will need to also back it by performajnce on the job.
I fully agree with you . For an example people think they can do automotive work until they really try. what takes me 5 min can take them an 1 or 2 to do
It is easy to see this, in so many of my students. They struggle with one subject, yet excel at another. Finding out what it is that motivates them, and how to best convey the material to them is the challenge.
Theodore,
This is why we need to build our instruction around application and relevancy. The students need to see ROI on their efforts if they are going to be engaged.
Gary
I agree with you statement that, “People learn in different ways and it doesn't make them any less smart. Pen and paper test don't always measure how smart someone is.†This to me means that we should take into consideration not only written test but also consider class participation in grading students. Being aware of dominant intelligences and constructing our lesson plans to match the dominant intelligences of our students is very important.
We also have to take into consideration the needs of the workplace. Read, math and communication skill are required. We have to tailor our instructions to insure that our students are proficient in all required areas.
Indeed, people are eager to judge a person by what they do or have not achieved yet they would never be able to perform some of the tasks in a given trade with their "degree".
People learn in different ways and it doesn't make them any less smart. Pen and paper test don't always measure how smart someone is, some people just can't take tests or put their knowledge down on paper.
Hi Mario,
I agree. A dedicated and enthusiastic student that wants to acquire the knowledge and skills to be successful goes a very long way in terms of a career for me.
Gary
I don't think it makes a difference whether the person has a degree or not. Work ethic and retention of information is what I'm looking for.
Hi Steve,
A powerful point to consider and one we need to remember as we work with students. They need to see their own value in relation to what they are learning.
Gary
