Learning

we utilize all aspects of learning, so there is something for everyone. What they don't process through powerpoint, they can supplement through hands on, or visual learning, since we supply plenty of pictures, graphs, and diagrams.

PATRICIA,
You make a good point that students need to realize. If they are going to be successful in their careers they are going to have to be life long learners just as we are. Graduation does not mean the end of learning, though sometimes they thing so.

I love learning, therefore i encourage students to continue to learn after they leave class. I tell them to see where their new skills will take them in their new careers.

I stress Power Point and many written exercises for manuscripts in my speech classes.

At the start of my classes I sometimes have the students feel out an index card informing of what they prefer when learning. I have found that PowerPoint and student do not mix because they focus on writing the notes instead of comprehending what is being taught.

Training aids or every day examples helps

Hands on is an amazing technique. Also through allowing the students to walk you through the demos themselves. By allowing yourself to act as if the demo is new to you, and allowing the students to walk you through and show you how much they have retained.

Joe,
This is a constant challenge for all of us instructors. We need to "read" our students in terms of both verbal and non-verbal messages that are being sent. This will help us to identify and then support those that are in need of some additional help.

I think that using various methods of learning can help a student retain the information better. I believe it also helps them validate things they may think are right but need to actually perform to make sure.

I agree. I have realized this when a student suddenly has a breakthrough on understanding a Cost Control concept. I may have reviewed the concept out loud, on the board, on the PPT, etc. However, it is when I approach the concept from a different angle (personal story) that the student suddenly makes the connection. My biggest concern is to get the entire class to communicate with me on what they understand and don't understand.

The more ways you can show someone what you are trying to teach them the more chances they have to learn it in a way that makes sense to them. Just focusing on your comfort zone as an instructor is limiting to the students you are trying to reach.

I repaet the same process over and over

Every one learns in different and multiple ways, like Brain says, use pictures, hands-on pass arounds, training aids, etc....

Brian,
Right you are. Students need to have variety in their learning options. This will help them to stay engaged and focused on both the content and how it impacts their future career options.
