In order to reach all studdnts, differennt teaching modalities should be used to teach and reinforce learnig.

Victor,
You raise a good point about your observation in relation to having the students for such a short period of time. So your strategy of offering all of the preference areas in your instructional delivery is a good one because that way are helping each student work in his/her preferred area at least part of the course.
Gary

I agree, using the four learning preferences seems to work the best for me. It seems like most of my students are hands on learners, common for auto techs, but they always seem to something from the other three at varying degrees, though it can be hard to tell with only three weeks.

Susan ,
Good for you. Learner like variety and change of pace. By following this strategy you are offering both so your students will be engaged and focused on the content.
Gary

I agree, trying to use a variety of different instructional techniques will assist in teaching to multiple intelligences.

I am a nursing instructor and in the lab, we try to incorporate this idea, by having the students read the skill sheet, then we play a video of the skill, demonstrate the skill and then have the studen practice the skill. By utilizing this method, we are able to target most of the different methods that students learn.

The first step is assessment after which I will hone my delivery based on the results. Several approaches may be combined in delivery of material.

Hi Neal,
Good to hear about the experience you have with multiple intelligences. By knowing how students process information you can target your instruction to assist them in the learning process just as you have outlined in your comments.
Thanks for sharing your insight about MI with us.
Gary

i first learned of multiple intelligences when was training to become an instructor. it was under another name but the idea was the same. since then i have tried to reach each style of learning. i act out the motions in my demos. i try to sound like what they will hear. reading diagrams and writing what ifs helps too. what worries me is the movement to much less leeway in the classroom. It looks like within 3 years the setup will give me a script to follow with a day by day chart down to the hour. also online training used in our industury is making large in roads to our schools. it is good for them to see what they will be facing in the field but how will it affect those just starting their training. unless the online course also takes into consideration the different ways students learn some of them may be lost.

I use a variety of approaches in the classroom. for example, lecture for a bit, then discussion among students and me, hand out outlines and lists of key items (using different colors of paper), then group/team exercises, and brief-backs. This keeps the students engaged and appeals to multiple intelligences to some extent. Seems to work well. I think where I could improve on this approach is to make an effort to assess multiple intelligences of students for insights in where to place emphasis on teaching methods.

Within the type of teaching I do, we have both verbal and visual going on at the same time. One thing I do notice is I have students who do not do well on their written quizzes but do good practically by reproducing the product that I am demoing, however the reverse for students who do well at quizzes struggle in reproducing the product that is required from them.

This is not so in every case of my students. I find that when doing quiz reviews I have to be very precise for the students who struggle and I ask the students who don't to assist them in reviewing outside of class and then the reverse for people who struggle with producing the actual product. Overall this helps to give a good balance of teaching. The students then become the teacher.

Hi Heather,
Good point about the value of understanding multiple intelligences. This information will be of help as you develop your different instructional strategies.
Gary

Hi Robert,
Good to hear that the content of the course helped you acquire some new knowledge. This information will help you to relate more with your students and facilitate more targeted instructional planning. I wish you much teaching success.
Gary

Drawing from a students experiencial intellegence not just book knowledge during lecture and dsicussion is a great way to show the importance of the different types of intelligence and prove that just being book smart in cooking is actually not enough if it cannot be applied in the real world

I rely heavily on lecture while doing. I keep my pure lecture down to 15% and primarily use tactile demonstrations with lecture then have the student repeat what I have show. I correct and give an example from my own experience of how it can be useful. This seems to work straight across the board for all learning styles.

I found that understanding and being able to identify multiple intelligences makes the learning environment comfortable for both student and teacher. I teach at a technical college where I have students varying greatly in age and education. I may have a 19 year old out of high school and a 50 year old with a Masters. The challenge is to ID the teaching style that will not only maximize retention but facilitate classroom management.

By understand multiple intelligences one can plan course content to reach the different intelligences through using different styles to communicate a single concept. For example, a concept may be discussed through lecture, an example or demonstration may be used, and small groups may be used to answer questions about the concept.

I was unaware of multiple intelligences. It will change my methodology for the better. Learning about student life experiences makes it easier to present new information in a manner that they can relate.

knowing multiple intelligences also helps in the cosmetology classroom where there is a lot of hands on instruction going on. it gives me an opportunity to reach my learners in new and inventive ways.

By learning multiple teaching methods, I can understand a student learning abilities. how they interpt and process in formation. reach their comfort zone.

i always thought that if a student was talking during lecture that they were not learning. with the information in this section i now realize that students need to process information differently. I am going to relax my classroom policies and see if the grades go up at all.
