how important do you feel previous education is to your current student?

This is true and as a result we need to help our non-traditional students have early success so they can build their self confidence.

if they are fresh out of school, normally they are ready for more school versus if they have been out for a while it seems to make it difficult to get them back into "school mode" and wanting to learn again.
If we're concerned with prior application of formal education, and/or life expierences, I would say that it can/does play a role in the level of intellect students come to class with. Obviously someone with prior knowledge of the field of study can learn at a faster rate than someone to whom the field of study is new to them.Which in turn, you can challenge these students to higher levels of acheivement.
