LEARNING METHODS

WE USE MANY DIFFERENT METHODS OF LEARNING TO HELP OUR STUDENT OBTAIN THE MAX OUT OF A COURSE. SOME THINGS WE USE INCLUDE POWER POINT, HAND NOTES, HANDS ON LABS, TRAINING AIDS FOR DEMO'S, ECT.

Candace,
I think you will really like the results you get by using this approach. It will give you addition insight into how to customize your instruction to meet the learning needs of your current group of students.

I like the idea of the quiz. It is a good way to get the students to understand more about their learning styles and habits as well as get to start up a discussion with their classmates on the different types of learning styles. This could lead to them sharing ideas about how they study and prepare for tests which may in the end help several of the students who would perhaps have struggled.

Deborah,
I think you are going to really like the results you get from your learning group method. This strategy really helps the learners to become engaged.

I find that having the student listen to my verbal questions, answer verbally and then write the answer has improved their retention from my lectures alone. I plan to incorporate some "group" learning for my interpersonal learners.

Diane,
You make a good point about the need for a variety of instructional deliveries. The more instructor offer variety the more opportunity there is to appeal to the different learning preferences of students.

Audio is another useful method for those students that learn with that method. Demos and PowerPoint with the instructor explaining things goes a long way in supporting the majority of our students and their variety of learning methods. It is important to touch on as many learning styles as possible when teaching online as it is difficult to ascertain student leaning styles without being in the same room!

There are many learning methods can be used powerpoints, peripheral information, colors, music, seating position in class, quizzes, games, somehow be used as teaching depends on the subject and the class.

Lisa,
This is a great way to start a class off. By having this information it will really help with your instructional planning and as you say the big benefit is that the students have this information about themselves as well. Of mutual benefit to everyone.

I use a very simple quiz that I found on line. The students take it the first day of class and then we discuss the different learning styles and strategies geered towards them. I have used a number of different test that I have found and I haven't found one that is better than another. The important thing is for the students to start thinking about how they learn and for me to offer teaching modalities that address all the learning styles.

George,
Glad to hear that you have this additional resource to use. Let me know how it works for you.

Outstanding. I will use that technique Monday in Poland.

George

George,
In situations like this I use a very unscientific method of observation. I give my students a brief bit of information in bullet or list form verbally. While sharing this information I look for how they react to the information and try to get it down. For example, some may just listen, others may write the points down, others may draw "doodles" of the point. I can quickly see how they are processing information. I can see my visual learners through their pictures, the auditory learners through their listening, and my tactile learners through their motion of writing points down. Then I develop my instructional delivery around these groups as I move through the course.

I teach to many students that English is not their primary language. It is difficult to assess what type of learners they are when you only have limited exposure. Do you have any suggestions on how I can determine rapidly the their preferred learning methods?
Thanks

George

Jack,
