Skill verses knowledge

Skill relevancy ids easy to demonstrate. Knowledge less so. How can one demonstrate rhe relevancy of professional knowledge?

Tony,
I have encountered those same kind of people. To be successful there needs to be a blend between knowledge and application. Mix in critical thinking and problem solving skills and you have a winner.

As a vocational instructor, combining hands-on skills, coupled with core knowledge of operation are key within the service industry. I have come across people with a comprehensive knowledge of operation but lacked the skills to perform the task to industry standards.

Darlene,
Good point. Without both skills and knowledge students are going to be limited in their careers when they are going to be asked to problem solve and do critical thinking. They will be able to just perform rote operations and not take their expertise to the next level.

Skill(s) is very important and relevant to what we practice in our fields. Skill(s) is/are irrelevant if it doesn't have the knowledge to tie it together with safe practice. Therefore, provide the knowlegde and skill and our students develop competency with practice.

That is a valuable topic as it addresse how learning truly takes places. In a system that has hands-on experience,it makes perfect sense to monitor and measure both types of skills.

Skills are the sum of applied knowledge. If we have our students continually practice and repeat what they have learned eventually what is learned becomes what is known.

I agree if you tie in the application with the required written knowledge then there is better understanding of the materials importance. This will cover students that have different learning styles.

Hi Homer,
Give student the concept and then demonstrate it. The key is to illustrate for the students both application and relevancy. By showing both you are helping them to acquire the competencies needed.
