Pretesting

I think Pretesting for a course in the beginning is a valuable tool in assessing the students ability to process the information in the course moving forward. I did this to some degree in my courses before but am more committed to doing it moving forward.

Clifton,
I use pretesting in my courses as well. I really like having the base line information about my students so I can plan my instructional delivery more accurately.

Pretest help a lot. It helps access where the student's head is when he/she first gets to your class. Its a great learning "ice-breaker"...

Great suggestion! I'll try to find a way to incorporate that into my classes.

Overall, the "pretesting" section of this module was very well written and very inspiring. I had tried it before, with so-so results. I will certainly revive this technique and give it another chance. Thanks!

Richard ,
This is a good use of pretest results. Good way to reinforce what the students need to retain of the course content.

I like to collect the pretests after the class grades them. then at the end of the course had them back and let them make corrtections and use them as a study aid.

Pretesting not only gives an insight into the students ability to process the information covered in the course,we can also ask questions pertaining to what they know of the tools and equipment they must be able to use to accomplish the lab related work they must do, as in the use of micrometers and other measuring devices used in automotive engine and machine work related labs.

with a pre test you can find out what areas really need to be covered in great detail.

Pretesting is a strong way to see what students have retained from previous courses. It also allows the instructor to guage what information may need to be recovered for the students to have successful outcomes.

whole heartedly agree. this is way of learning about strengths and weakness. and improving on all of the fundamental skills.

Hi Jay,
I agree with you about pretesting. It is a valuable tool to help you to target the current students. You have a foundational base from which you can do your instructional planning.
