Gilbert,
Application is an essential part of the learning process. By having them practice their newly acquired knowledge and skills they are seeing the value of what they have just learned.

I find that an excellent opportunity for my nursing students to apply their theory knowledge is to practice their nursing skills in the skills lab.
Julie,
Yes, they do. Many of them don't seem to get it and by showing them how the content relates to real life they start seeing value and connection to their own future success.

I agree that its pertinent to relate the subject at hand to a real life experience's. This way the students can see what potential situations can come their way as well keep their focus on their goals!
I try to add a personal experience to the material, sometimes helps with retention, and also gives value to the subject.
As a rule in my class usually the subject is discussed references are made, then the class follows up with hands on procedures relating to the subject matter. Then it is demonstrated to the student how it is related to their profession. By doing this, the conection between profession and class comes together.
Yes it is very important to stay focused on the learning objectives, so that students can see their progress towards their career goals. It is also just as important to use varied examples that are relevant to their careers and to to their previous experiences.
I've found that if I can relate any classroom activity to an experience the student has had, this will help them understand to topic much better.
Every subject must have its application even if it is a minute part of a whole. Incorporating application into the instruction helps to motivate the student to learn.
Yes it is because it directly realtes the goals and expectations of the students to thier chosen profession
