keeping it relevant…

makes them want to succeed even more. if something they are doing at the present time, is something that is going to be earning them recognition and money in the future, the motivation increases.

Stephen,
Good strategy. You are helping your students to connect the dots between what they are being taught and what they will face in the work world. They need all the help they can get to make this connection.

Gary Meers, Ed.D.

In my class where they are training to repair vehicles I always refer to it in the introduction as on the job training because when they finish school these are the jobs they will be doing. I try to relate even the no technical aspects to future job at hand.

Dear Warren:

Relevance is a constant theme that comes up. Students want to see why they are learning something and of what value could it be. I always suggest to my students to volunteer in the field they are pursuing and then begin applying what they have learned thus far. The feedback from students who volunteer is very positive. This also gives students a sense of "ownership".

Warren,
This is what learning is all about. Acquiring knowledge and skill that can be used in diverse settings.

it sure is Gary, you get a special feeling when you first start to apply newly learned skills to something that is career related, regardless of whether this is happening in a classroom.

Warren,
Right you are and it is so important that we continue to share this information with our students. They can get bogged down in the daily aspects of being students and forget they are preparing for their future. The more they can see their future the more engaged they become.
