Pre quiz
The pre quiz is very important students know wht they need to spend extra time on, students can apply the pretest questions to the lecture student are able to ask the instructor questions
I agree with this Stu, I like this idea... is it a review you go over before an exam?
David,
Yes they do and they give the students and idea of the type of tests you will be giving them. So they can start to feel more at ease as they prepare for the tests.

Pre quizes help prepare students for what may be on future test.
Darrell,
I use pretesting for the reasons you list. I like knowing where the current group of students are coming from so I can customize my instruction to them and their learning needs.

As and Elective Instructor, my students have already had aleast 33 weeks of instruction before they get to me. At the beginning of each 3 week module I give a Pre-Quiz,IMHO, this gives the student the chance to see what will be covered by Power Point and in Lab. It also gives me the opportunity to see what level of knowledge is possessed by my students. Now I know that "quiz scores" are only used as a guage, but when I compare Pre-quiz scores of students, I can see who has retained the information that has been previously taught to them (as my elective really is no different than any of the modules previously taken) The Pre-Quiz allows me to take a look at who has done their homework.
I also go over things they will see on the quiz to put them in a good study mode.
Peter,
That's fine because each instructor has to find what will work for him and her in their setting. Teaching is like many other fields. We have a tool box in which we put teaching tools and then we pull out different tools to use with different groups of students. So explore be creative and continue to look for ways to help your students to be effective learners. I wish you continued teaching success.

im not a big fan of prequiz, although i agree that it helps them to focus on specific material, i think it narrows their studies.
It also helps to assist the instructors with their teaching methods
I think the pretest helps relieve the stress for the students and they have an idea of what they do not understand in the content. It also gives them time to ask questions before the actual test in the areas they have trouble.
Shannon,
This is a great way to learn more about the students and helps them get settled into the course. Thank you for sharing this with us. I know it will be of benefit to other instructors.

My class goes in 6 week terms, so the pre-test alleviates some of the anxiety and stress students have about the information over the next 6 weeks. I also like to provide an open section where students can write what they would like to learn about the topic over the next 6 weeks. This shows me where their interests lies and give each student an opportunity to think ahead, and be involved in their learning.
Francine,
I use pretests to get a baseline on my students so I can plan my instructional content and delivery around my current group of learners. I have found the information I get from these activity to be extremely valuable for both the students and their class success.
