A simple way I have found to help students to express such interests and/or ambitions is to have them write them down on a 3X5 card. This way they get to think about their goals and then put them to paper. Also, when asked to share them they are more confident because they don't have to come up with them off the top of their head they have them written down so they can read them.

Assessing the needs of your students is necessary but also can be a difficult experience if the students are reticent to express their interests or ambitions. Some are not sure of their own capabilities,skills and past experiences that could enable the instructor to properly assess that particular individual.

I agree that assessing students and their expectations is a great way to find out the different needs and wants of a student. From the students stand point they are there for one reason that is to learn the correct knowledge they need for going out into the field for a career. Also some students have an idea of what they want but realize once they start that path it's just not for them. Student assessments helps out the insturctor to learn a little about each student but it also helps the student to figure out what they want out of their education.

It is important to address student needs to enhance their learning potential. students need to have support and guidance in order to be successful.
