Judicious review

As a clinical instructor I plan touse judicious review at the clinical site with the students skills as well as helping them to review and link they information they are using in their theory classes.

Kathy,
This is such a good point because this form of review yields valuable results as you mention. Also, it helps the students to see what they have learned and how far they have progressed in knowledge and skill development.

Judicious review helps students tremendously in applying their knowledge and not only memorizing for a test. keeps the course comprehensive and keeps the "big picture" always in the front.

Rich,
I wish you success with this strategy. I think you and your students are going to like the results you get.

I agree. And I'm currently reviewing my pre-test/reviewing process to help integrate previous courses and learning. There is always a review before the actual lecture starts, but I love the idea of having them fill in all the blanks and put those pieces together themselves. Thanks for the idea!

Brent,
This is a very active way of teaching that engages your students. I commend you for your teaching style. Most classes like this let the students be passive learners and as a result they learn the minimum to pass the course.

I use reviews that allow students to connect content. For instance, in my politics classes, I cover the colonial era with stories that draw upon the material learned. The reviews I utilize are cooperative in nature and use the Socratic method. For example, I will say, "The anti-federalists like Thomas Jefferson opposed the new Constitution. Now, remembering why we fought the revolution, why did they oppose the new Constitution?" As they give their responses, I write them on the board in an abbreviated form, leaving blank spaces where there is important content left out. This turns a review into a two-way process and allows students to see what they may have overlooked, link the material into a story, verify their notes are comprehensive, fosters peer-to-peer discussion in their language rather than mine, and facilitates overall engagement.

Katrina,
Good strategy to use because this way they will see the value of the content they have learned and be able to make application of it. Also, this review will show them what they know and what areas they need to increase their knowledge and skills in.
