Studying

Teaching the diffferent methods of studying to your students helps them to acquire the knowledge needed for learning in class and doing their homework successfully

Dr. Richard,
Your last sentence says it all. They need to be committed to being students, committed to being successful and committed to securing the support that is needed such as a study group. When all of these commitment categories are in place than with some self discipline the students will be successful. First and foremost they must "want it" if they are going to achieve their goals.

I appreciate and respect that you are still working on the question. Me too. I often challenge students with questions pursuant to their commitment towards their education. I break it down further to discuss their motivation and confidence. I have received comments such as: "The course is harder than I thought." "The course is boring." "The more I learn, the more I realize I have to learn." "I have a job." "I have a family." My favorite is: "I have not received the direction or help that I need." I classify them as disillusioned learners. I use day-to-day reminders, coaching, and counseling. For some, I see behavioral change and actual engaging in study. What really works, is them committing themselves to a study group.

Studying for most students is broken down into there learning styles. They must try and use the style that will work best for them and always ask for guidence when there method is not working.

Katrina,
I agree with you about the need for helping students to develop good study habits. I start my adult students off with guided notes which helps them to identify the critical points that they need to know and this really helps them to build their confidence as students.

I feel that building study habits are difficult for many students, especially those that have been out of school for a long period of time. It is important that skills are developed at early stages of the program.

The biggest task with this subject is how to motivate the student with them at home while reviewing your material. I feel like giving little tasks with challenges helps keep things exciting for the start of the next day for the review of the challenge and gets their motivation started.

Jeannie,
This is an important developmental aspect of their education. They need to learn how to work with others and then work toward common solutions.
Gary

I love to encourage my students to apply themselves in study groups.

I completely agree. It also builds up their confidence.

Richard ,
So do I. I think these are great aids to get the students engaged and connected to the course.
Gary

I like to usse crosswords and word finds as study learning aids to try to make things more intereative for the students.

This can prove tricky because if students don't know what type of learner they are or what methods work for them, they will continue to struggle with the information.

My classes benefitted from the different studying methods. They all had their own preferences on the methods.

Hi Kimberly,
This is a great way to help students focus in on the key points. As you know many of them don't have the study skills needed to "find" the key concepts and then get them committed to memory.
Gary

I provide the students with an exam study guide outlining the main topics for the exam. I encourage them to write out all pertinant info from the outline

Good question Roy! Students today believe that the instructor gives the grade instead of realizing that they earn it. In addition with all the different distractions and hassles of life these students rarely have time to study and just want to wing their way through with test reviews, curves and extra credit. How does an intructor ensure students are studying and really learning the material. Sometimes an instructor might be forced to pass students due to retention and risk of students falling out due to poor academics. This is the reality of education today when it comes to adult learning.

Hi Roy,
Still working on the answer to your question. The majority of my students are those in the age group you mention and it is an ongoing challenge for me to convey the message that I have already graduated so I don't need to earn an grade but they do. So as a result they are going to have to put forth the effort to be successful and if they don't they will get to take my class over and over and over again. (I teach a required foundational course so I am a gate keeper in many respects). Some get it and some don't and they don't move on. I have administrative support and this is a great help when students don't succeed in the course.
Gary

How do you get students to take responsibility for studying in today's generation? These students (younger) seem to believe they should be paid (good grades) and not have to work or study. I am at a loss here.
