Culture and decoding

What can you do help with decoding in a foreign culture?

Donna,
In order to be successful with diverse student groups you need an integration of different components of their culture and learning foundation. You make a good point about how this needs to be done.

You would first need to have an understanding of the culture and the thinking processes used in that particular culture, as those patterns change from one culture to another. Then you would have to undestand the language of that culture, and finally, be able to help put these together within the framework of that culture.

Well, I can first start by selecting certin similarities and grow from there. After breaking the ice the class should flow well.

Hi Mario,
These connection points are very important for students to have. They can rely on their life experiences to help them relate to the course content.

I try to link items that that culture is familiar with. Terms and word pictures that that culture can relate with. Ultimately its about tapping into something familiar...

Hi Jeffrey,
I try to find items in that culture I can connect to the words we are trying to decode. This way the students can think in their own language and/or culture before making an application in the classroom setting.
