Retention of Information
I start each class by writing about key concepts for that day on the board.During classroom discussions I explain these concepts. At the end, of class I go around the room and ask students to explain a term/concept in their own words. I also ask students if they still have other questions. I recommend that they highlight or use post its to remember these key items. What do others do along these lines?
Keith,
Good way to check for understanding. This gives you insight into what you need to do to make that day's session even more effective and valuable to and for your students.

At the beginning of each class i ask the student to do a reveiw of the previous class instructions. this allows for a transition into the next lecture or assignement.
Stephen,
This way the students can use their different learning preferences to acquire the content. This also reinforces the learning that has occurred so far and that increases content retention.

I also highlight information and I usually explaing most concepts in more than one way from more than one point of veiw. By presenting the same information in different ways there is some reveiw built into the lesson and sometimes brings up questions that usually show where someone really did not quite understand.
Jennifer,
Sounds like a fun and very beneficial way to review content. Being able to defend the content says you know the content. Not bad being the judge either. I am sure your students look forward to these sessions.

I have them explain/defend their answers or point of view; the class gets to interrogate them. We set it up like a courtroom (where I'm the judge). This also helps them stay focused and take turns talking. Quite lively and they said they learn a great amount and come away with more confidence.
Bret,
Good ideas, thanks for sharing these strategies with us. I hope you get feedback and input from other participants with ideas that will work in your classroom.
