This is a good idea, I have shared mine with students but it would be a fun challenge to have them come up with their own.

Vickie,
I am a big fan as well. They are fun as well as highly effective as learning devices. Also, each course phase I am amazed and amused at the creative mnemonics that the students come up with.

I love using Mnemonics. The metric system, the 5 rights of medication administration, and remembering the order of an interview are mnemonics I have used and would encourage others to use as well. They can be fun and use the creativity of students.

Brian,
Your students will have fun with developing them as well as using them to learn various procedures, terms and applications.

Wow, I like this method of challenging and involving students in the teaching process. I am going to incorporate this in the more challenging topics I teach.

Lindsey,
I know you and your students are going to have fun with this activity. I look forward to this activity each time I teach my course because I get to see the creativity of my students in coming up with mnemonics that fit our course content.

I think that having them come up with a mnemonic is a great idea! I'm going to have to try that.

Tracey,
I agree and use them a lot in my courses. They are fun for the students to make up and share with the rest of the class.

Mnemonics are a useful tool to help students remember information in an organized way.

Nancy,
My students love to make them up and share with each other. We have some fun times when we put them on the board.

I have used this many times and have encouraged my children and students to take advantage of this when it is hard to remember sequential events, etc.

I love having my students come up with mnemonics. The crazier the better they are able to remember the information.

Jeanine,
I use mnemonics a lot in my field and have the students develop their own as we move through the course. They are so creative with what they come up with plus we have a lot of fun sharing them. Your contest is such a great way to get them engaged in the material while increasing their retention of content.

We had a contest in class to see who could invent the most popular mnemonic. They studied without realizing they were studying to create them and had fun sharing theirs for the "competition". We had a 100% pass rate on our MA cert test for the first time!

Noel,
Great to hear these examples of how mnemonics work for both students and instructors. I am like you in that I use them a lot in my career field as well as in my teaching. They are fun to develop and really help when I need to get some procedure or list burned into my working memory.

I teach a subject called Career Success where I have the students work on memory retention exercises via Mnemonics. This really works great.. and the good thing about this is that they enjoy using the technique! I personally see using this approach very beneficial even for myself.. I use is a lot of times in this career and it really works!

Alcide,
I am such a big fan of mnemonics and your example reinforces why I am. They make the gaining and retaining of content so much easier and for a longer period of time.

I use Mnemonics in class to tell the difference between Metric thread diameter. I tell them to write down MPT= Milimeteres Per Thread....Instead of Threads Per Milimeter, which would be wrong, especially on a Quiz.

James,
Good for you. My students love to invent new mnemonics. I create teams and give prizes for them. We all have fun and the content is learned. A win win for everyone.
