Graphic organizers

I like the idea of uding graphic organizers to help students identify the key points. They can also help when having the students summarize the into at the end of class for better learning.

Thank you. I developed two graphic organizers that I will use in my class while I was taking this course!

Joyce,
I use them in classes for the reasons you list. They are a great support to my students especially those that are weak in note taking and study skills.

I use many graphics aids with powerpoint. However, this course highlighted several ways in which I can improve on those aids, buy simplifying, and also showing a particular flow. I will be revising them to hopefully increase their effectiveness.

This is the reason I like to use graphic organizers. The graphic organizer helps students to process information. They can see the relationships of concepts or the order of procedures, etc. This is a great way to help students decode information and accellerate learning toward recoding.

James,
Great to hear of your moment. I know it will result in the development of closer connections between the content and the application process. The more this can be done the greater the retention of the content will be by students.

After reviewing the section on Graphic organizing, I had a slight eureka moment. Most career education has a direct application to real world environments. Because of this, establishing pictographic relationships between concepts and skills in relations to the career will help with the associative process. We have used this on my campus but only sporadically. See this in conjunction with the ideas of decoding and recoding made it become in my mind a much more widely usable tools in the classroom.

Henry,
They work really well for ELL students and those individuals that need some additional pictorial support to put course content in order. You might want to consider using them the next time this type of learning situation comes up and see if they work for your students.

I've never used them, but do think it would be a helpful addition to the classroom.

Ruth,

Graphic organizers are great to enhance learning for all students who are visual learners in particular but they allow the student to see the relationships between concepts and call them forward from your long term memory more easily.

Katrina,
Good use of them They work in so many different settings and applications.
