Judgement

In the thinking process, you cannot make a right and sound decision without having all of the facts and then weighing them out to make the best choice and that may require talking to others.

Wendy,
Thanks for bringing in sound judgement as a part of reflective and critical thinking because it certainly is. The use of "common sense" goes a long way in helping students to come up with workable solutions to problems.

I completely agree. I teach my students about this every single day. I relate so many of the choices they make to making sound judgement as well as critical thinking.

In order to make judegment on any subject, one must be knowledgeable of the subject matter. It is unfair for us as instructors to assume that they can make proper judgements on a certain matter. We first need to find out if they indeed have been able to process the information given to them and help them to think critically and then form a judgement.

Sue,
The majority of what we do in our careers is to make decisions about situations and individuals. We frequently are problem solvers and as a result we need to use our critical thinking skills. So the more you can help them develop these skills the easier their transition will be into their profession.

The definition of judgement as found in the Webster Dictionary is the process of forming an opinion or evaluation by discrerning and comparing. The students are making judgrments in the classroom/clinic situation as they learn various dental skills. They have to determine and make a judgements as to the best way to perform the procedure in assisting the skills of the doctor.
