Problem solving

Problem solving is an integral part in College Math that involves problem solving using venn diagram . I enjoy teaching problem soving . I also learnt a lot from this course.

David,
Your approach is so supportive of developing problem solving skills. The systematic approach is essential because without such an approach the potential problem solver is going to bounce around trying to find a solution without really being able to focus in on the steps required to make progress in reaching a solution. Good work in taking this approach.

Problem solving is key in every aspect of life including being able to learn new things. problem solving and common sense go hand in hand when trying to figure out a problem or situation for the first time. I suggest to my students to go step by step through the problem and write down what they find. Taking a systematic approach to problems tends to make things clearer for the student.

Ray,
I agree with you. Problem solving is a set of tools that is necessary when dealing with customer service.

Ray,
This is an important service you are providing your students. It seems like there are decisions to be made on a constant basis in a restaurant. Helping your students to make good decisions under pressure will result in more career success for them.

Problem solving is a every moment occurance in a restaurant. I teach culinary arts and providing tactics and cetain questions to ask creates a more confident professional that will increase their problem solving capabilities.

Glenn,
Thank you for this example on problem solving. The apple example gives me a way of understanding in parts and then the whole of the cost of what that pie will be in relation to potential profit. This is a way for students to understand the economy of scale needed for business success.

I too love problem solving as it makes our students see another perspective of the goal that you are striving for. I feel that students will retain more when the explaination is given to them in realistic terms. I too teach food costing and when the term yield percentages comes to play, i use the analogy of an apple used for a pie and after peeling and removing its core you will only have about a 82% yield and when they visualize that...........they can now see your point.

Germain,
Thank you for these comments about what students need to learn and be able to implement. These are life long skills and need to be developed and refined both in the work world as well in their personal lives.

Problem solving is an integral part of all learning. We don't learn unless we're challenged by a problem and strive to solve it. What we must hope for, however, is not just discrete problem solving, but integrative learning wherein the learner connects what is learned across disciplines in order to see the whole of some aspect of reality/experience. That is what students need to do in life, in their work and beyond.

Laxmi,
Glad the course was of help to you. I wish you continued teaching success in the area of helping students to be problem solvers and critical thinkers.
