Critical Thinking #3
I totally agree that Reflective Thinking is a process to help critical thinkers to overcome that trap and come up with the viable workable solutions.
I agree, in my classes I constantly refer to using critical thinking skills to come up with what may be the cause of the problem. This ensures that they are checking things that may actually be the cause of the problem.
I stress this very much in class, telling them that it is easier to find the problem if you know what you are looking for!
Ben,
Good advice for your students. The wait time you are having them do helps them to think through and explore their answers before they respond. We need to help them to see how a common sense approach can do much to facilitate decision making.

It seems to me that common sense is a thing of the past. We still need to teach them that is hot don't touch. I advise my students to take three seconds before answering a question. It really does help with the critical thinking. Doing this reduces the amount of times I need to say "lets think about this"
DeAndre,
Some where along the way we have lost "common sense" and we need to help our students to get it. If we can help our students to think about things in a basic and foundational way and then build on that I think we can help them to move toward being reflective thinkers. I wish us both luck.

Reflective thinking is critical. And, for most of our young people reflective thinking is a skill or ability they lack. Hence, the challenge is helping our students to understand why reflective reasoning is important and how to develop their ability to implement and utilize reflective reasoning.
Paul,
So true and so important for person and professional growth.

Handling of life experiences sucessfully builds on critical thinking abilities for most individuals.
Cecilia,
Well said and this is why we need to help our students to become reflective thinkers as they move through our courses.
