problem solving is the main job of an RN. RT, or MD.
This is very important for us in clinic and for our students to trouble shoot all the problems than can happen in a particular situation. We teach them how to approach step by step to a problem and how to solve it and it is different from all other jobs because we are dealing with the people life.
Teaching Pathology is challenging at times. Using case study's and breaking into small groups is a very productive. this is way to bring in all learning styles and problem solving in a group setting. Students look forward to presenting their case and conclusion to the class.
Zekrayat,
I am impressed how you approach helping your students to approach problem solving and critical thinking. Yes, your field does have a lot of responsibility and as you prepare the next generation of professionals to enter the field you want to make sure they realize how much responsibility they really have.

While teaching adult echocardiography, I give the students many different scenarios, even on the test. It has the student use critical thinking as to what is the patients age, what kind of symptoms and signs they are having, what may you see on a 2D echo exam. Then I ask them what kind of measurements and formulas they would use and explain why. I also have the students rate the patients severity of the disease. Working in the medical field we do not always have a doctor telling us what to do, what to look for, how to evaluate, what to assess, it is sonographer dependent and they must know it is a critical environment and we hold a huge amount of responsibility on our plate.
Mindi,
Shortcuts often delay negative impact, while increasing it at the same time.

This is what I stress to student in the clinical setting. Short cuts are not the answer.
Marife,
I am so very glad to know of this. By knowing your style you can continuously enhance what and how you teach. Good work.

This course was very helpful is leading myself to realize what teaching style that I am using for my groups of students at clinicals. At clinicals is the perfect place for students to be able to problem solve and use thier critical thinking skills on patients in real life rather than case studies. At clinicals, I even enjoy guiding them to focus on points or facts and rationales to care for thier patients assigned.
abdul.gardezy,
You are so very correct. Taking short cuts in this arena will likely cause unnecessary injury, illness and/or deaths. This is very important to instill in your students. Thank you for your helpful contributions.
