Problem Solving
First of all analyze the problem. Write down what is given, then start thinking all steps are to be taken to solve the problems. I'm math instructor and use logic and problem solving in math.
Patricia,
You make a very good point about the need for balance in developing critical thinking and problem solving skills. It is not a quick nor easy process. We our micro-wave instant desire for answers we sometimes don't think through all of the elements needed for problem solving.

It would be amazing if it were that simple!! I feel like there are so many additional factors, that the road to the truth sometimes gets clouded. Our students have a hard time looking at the cold, hard facts. They are too focused on the emotional stimuli to calculate the analytical data. It becomes a bigger issue that needs to be handled with kid gloves. A combination of emotional support and theoretical solutions are definitely in order.
Laxmi,
You have a head start on many problem solvers due to your math background because your comments about analysis are right on target.
