You make a good point here, Krystal. We refer to finding and pointing out early success as "catching students doing things correctly."

I think that if you can show an adult student where they've improved, they will get a sense of pride and accomplishment for doing the class. Taking their specific motivations into account can help as well, such as asking at the end of the class "How do you see how this class has helped you?"

This a tough question. The only way I can think of to get internal motivations to would be to ask each student why he or she is in the program
