Understand student characteristics

As a student working towards my undergraduate degree in business, I have the unique ability to view both sides. It is in my opinion that the classification of "student" has evolved over the years, it is no longer uncommon to see an older student learning side-by-side with a student who just graduated from high school. I think it benefits all because it always students of different generations learn how to work with each other.

While the benefits of input from other students are clear in a traditional classroom, I feel at times in the lab/kitchen that some direction is not appropriate from other students. I seen an example of a student showing a shortcut to a culinary procedure, when the classical tecnique was the intended lesson.
Also, I have noticed that a few incidents where students seems put off that they did not get the instructor's intended lesson and the timely interpretations that apply.

Hi Ronald,
I always like to hear about situations where the students are not only students but also resources for the course. Students bring tremendous experiences to the classroom but often times are not used as resources. As instructors we need to use these resources where ever we can.

I can relate to this also. I have attended classes where the students thought I was the teacher. When they found out I was also a student, it was fun to see their reaction, but I was used both as a link from the teacher to the class, as well as, a link between the class and the teacher. Both sides were able to use everyone's experiences and knowledge to make information exchanges to flow freely for everyone.

I agree that the mixture of students is important. During our first day we introduce ourselves to each other and I ask the students "Why are you here." The older students
seem to open the younger students eyes when they here some of the reasons.

I think it's important to have a diverse student body, it only seeks to increase the students life experiences in dealing with many different types of people. In the long run that helps them as uch as the knowledge they learn.

It's helpful to most students to have a wide representation of age, gender, ethnic and cultural backgrounds in our classrooms. It allows for more opportunities for mentoring.

Alowwing the students to work with diverse students will increase learning, by providing different veiw points, and experiances.
I agree this is a benefit to students and instructors alike.
