student frustration at the entry level
Seems students just want to get the learning part over with so they can get into the field. They need a little more patience, but they don't see it.
Your absoulely right Leonardo. Even though we have older students who have been working in perhaps other fields. I tell them they are starting over and you need to start at the botton once again. If you work hard enough and improve your skills and maybe incorporate what you have learned in your other fields you will move up faster.
Every time this subject comes up with my students, I let them know that ultimately its going to be up to them. How well they improve thier skills and demonstrate their efficientcy in doing the job right the first time. Remeber that every student is different, and the responcability to do the job is up to "them". We are only hear to make sure that they are on the right track, and help motivate them to succeed. I Sure most students dont like to hear the "entry " level training, but they have to understand that when you learn a new skill, you have to start somewhere.
Don i agree some of the students feel that the skills will be best learned in the field and they have a hard time understanding the need for formal learning of the theory prior to application.
I agree with your statement regarding students needing more patience.I would suggest refocusing their attention back to WIIFM (whats in it for me?).Show the students both the short and longtime benefits of what you are teaching them.Relate stories and experiences from your own past to show them that you also had to learn the same skills they are now learning.Let them know you are human and understand their fears and frustrations and that you are there to help them succeed.
I work at a facillity that teaches entry level technicians. The bigest question is how soon will I be making 6 figure income. We have to slow them down and convince them to slow down and do the job right the first time. The money will come later
