student frustrations

Students are frustrated in many ways outside pressures, their inabilities, physical abilities, their knowledge limits, time constraints.

Hi David,
Neither do I. These students are or are suppose to be adults receiving an education that will enable them to earn a good living. To bring their frustrations to class and act out is not acceptable plus disrupts the learning of other students. These students should be warned to cease such behavior and if it doesn't change they should be removed from the class.

I understand the frustration when other events in a life cause a student to become frustrated in class. I don't understand the frustrated student's need to vent this frustration by constantly disrupting class and vandalizing training aids.

Hi Michael,
Good point about students overthinking some things. People, students included often hear what they want to hear and then when what they wanted to hear or thought they heard is not reality they get frustrated. By listening to them and working to make sure they understand your expectations you will do much to keep them focused and engaged in the learning process.

I agree, when a student is frustrated you need to try and talk to them and listen to what they are frustrated about. Listening can go along way with students. Alot of students also overthink things making things harder on themselves.

With my GED prep students, I find that often simply listening to their frustrations can go a long way to alleviating them. This particular population has gone a long time with few people showing them attention or care. Simply offering them a place to 'sound off' will help them to work through their own issues.

When it comes to student frustrations, perception certainly bears the consequences of reality.
What kinds of things can we do to create more realistic perceptions among our students regarding their training and head off some of these frustrations before they can take root?

I CAN RELATE TO STUDENTS FRUSTIONS. I SEE SEVERAL OF THESE LISTED DAILY. I HAVE A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF HOW TO COME TO GRIP WITH THEM

When I suspect a student is frustrated I will try to draw out of him/her the root cause of the frustrations then listen with interest to their reply. I find that most frustrations are blown out of proportion due to overthinking, and most fears/frustrations can be easily put to rest.

Teaching electrical class the student frustration is the biggest obstacle to overcome. The student is frustrated the week before knowing he or she is coming into the class. I spend the better half of the first day trying to calm them down.

I notice alot of students that dont understand things on the first day, they get frustrated and say they need toutering. It can sometimes be hard to get them to relax and give it a chance to sink in.
