language deficencies
I am an automotive instructor and some of the terms of our feild do not have direct translstions. how then do you get someone who does not speak english well to understand the concept i am teaching?
Hi Maria,
Many of the things suggested in terms of working with students onsight can be used online. For examples, watch the postings and see that each student is contributing. If not talk with the student privately and see how you can help them to develop the confidence start discussing.
Make sure all of your posted material is clear and easily accessible so the students don't withdraw from the class discussions and interactions due to the technology.
The key is to look for ways you can support the students even though they aren't actually on sight but are in need of instructional support.
If you have an specific questions I will be glad to answer them for you.

I teach online which makes doing what you suggest very difficult. What alternative do you suggest?
Maria
Show rather than tell may be your ultimate solution.
Also synonyms might work
Hi, I do have the same situation, I am a chef instructor teaching in spanish and there are a lots of words that can,t be translated to spanish. What I do is explain the concept but they have to learn the word in english or french.
I have learned that if given a list of turms to learn it helps in the learing prosses
Hi Scott,
I would suggest that you use a form of reverse teaching, much like reverse engineering. Get the students into the lab, show them procedures, equipment and materials. Walk them step by step through the learning sequence. Have them make applications and then start working on the concepts they need to learn in order to have the total course experience. This is the method I have used with good success.
