Hi David,
You make a number of good points about getting to know your students and understanding their needs. Self assessment helps an instructor to see how they are providing encouragement and/or support.

Hi Charles,
You make a great point about "hand holding" and student maturity. Many students have not made the transition to adulthood in their minds. They need to be reminded that they are in the class to develop skills and acquire knowledge that will help them to achieve their career goals.
We as instructors can help support and encourage but as you say at the end it is really up to them. There can be no blame shifting. It is what it is.

I think understanding the student is just as important as understanding employees that are your subordinates. You have to know how to reach each individual as and individual. Not to think you understand where they are comming from, but to know. Sometimes you need to understand yourself and how you were as a student in order to really reach your students
First off I have and will have more of these types of students, I have tryed several differnt things but mostly I tell them up frount that I'm here to help you to be successful, I'm not here to hold your hand and tell you everythings is going to be great when in reality it's more up to the person. I tell them how some things are in the real world and what may happen even if they don't want to hear it. To some it is a shock and they are in disbelief to others they may have already seen what life is all about. But with them all I'm honest about what I am willing to do for each and every one of them and I think that is why some come back when they are about to graduate and tell me thank you, those students will be very successful in life and I'm prode to have helped them. I would love to be able to reach more but again the student has to be willing to meet half way.
Hi Charles,
Challenging for instructors when students with these attitudes and backgrounds come into class. These students are in real need of developing "career skills" which are those skills needed to get, hold and progress in employment. They involve being neat, clean, being on time, getting along with others, etc. They need to be helped to develop an understanding of the the "Golden Rule" the person with the gold makes the rules. Otherwise they are not going to be successful in their careers.
What are some things you do do help them acquire these skills?
Gary
