Listening to your students.
I am new to teaching in a school but having been doing it in my profession for a while. I found that listening to what students have to say will solve many of the issues that may arrise in connecting with that student and any confusion they might have, may it be the content or even giving you insight on how to approach them better with the information.
Hi Jessica,
President Johnson had on the wall of the Oval Office a plaque that read "When you are listening you are learning." I have always liked that saying for the very reasons you sited in your comments.
Both students and instructor can learn if they will listen. Good advice, thanks for sharing it with us.
Gary
I agree with your statement. Just like reading is essential to become a good writer--listening is essential to become a good learner.
When you listen to your students, you're leading by example.
I also think that many students come into the classroom and are afraid of/intimidated by the instructor. Showing the students that you are human too is a good way to encourage a trusting relationship.
Hi Linda,
I like your addendum. It really sets a tone for respect for the students. This shows them how the class will be conducted and what the expectations are for the coming weeks.
Gary
I totally agree with this. One of the things I include in my addendum for my class is the following: "Participation in class discussion not only requires speaking, but also listening."
I feel this is a good reminder tht we can learn from each other.
I also find that listening to student concerns can generate good discussion. My students often come up with solutions/advice that is very helpful and may be something I had not considered. This helps students feel empowered and valued.
I agree that listening to students is essential in order to develop good rapport and trust. It also helps me to assess if my teaching methods are effective or if I have to make modifications to help the students learn the information in a more effective and interesting way.
Hi Samuel,
You make a good point about listening. We do have to hear both what is said and not said if we are going to get an accurate read of our students.
Gary
I find it extremely helpful to listen to my students. Often I have to hear what they "dont"say and draw them out to identify and recommend a course of action.
Hi Joseph,
Well said. This is what makes teaching so much fun. We get to impact lives and leave a legacy. We will each well in the future due to your efforts in training the next generation.
Gary
I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU CHEF...MY OWN STUDENTS AMAZE ME AT TIMES WITH THEIR STORIES ABOUT HOW SCHOOL TIED INTO WORK AND HOW THEY LOVE THAT WE WANT TO HEAR WHAT THEY HAVE TO SAY. THEY ARE AFTER ALL THE NEW BRIGADE OF CHEFS THAT WILL CARRY THE TORCH AFTER US.
I agree and listening to students help to identify and plan for key learning activities. Listening to students can make the teaching experience move along easier for the instructor and with more success for the students.
I enjoy lisening to my students. They are like different versions of us. they have questions and need answers to not only subject information of the course, but on the day to day isssues they face.

Hi Chris,
Listening is a very effective teaching tool. It wouldn't appear to be such but as you have mentioned listening and learning about students really helps you to be able to support them in their learning. We all need to listen carefully and completely when students share with us and as a result we will be able to focus our instructional strategies more accurately.
