Assessing student's needs/diversity

One of the largest problems I have is finding the time to work individually with each student to find out their needs/expectations and then to furthermore work with their specific 'individuality' or personal intricacies. I try to spend time during labs with each student to help address these issues as well as being as open to questions and have office time available so they can come to me with problems. Quite often I need to direct them to others within the college setting who are more qualified or in areas geared to addressing specific issues; i.e. financial aid, housing, career service, etc. Sometimes it it to direct them to help in the industry as well. Doesn't always work but being aware is always the best first step.

Hi Christin,
You are very fortunate to have such a resource available to you. Many schools don't have this so it puts a much greater burden on the instructor. Enjoy having this resource and so you can concentrate on your mentoring efforts. There are many rewards that come out of doing this.

I am so thankful for the LRC (learning resource center) We have Student services that has Success Managers that if for any reason I do not have the answer or canot help they are always avalibale to help direct the student to the help that they need. I am a mentor as well to a group of students that are assigned to me @ the start of the program, so I am here for them to help with any issues that are school or personal related.I follow them thru the time that they here @ school.

Hi Van,
The key phrase that you used is an important one. "Being aware". You are extending yourself in an attempt to learn more about your students and be supportive. This is a major part of our being good instructors. Keep up the good work.
