As instructors do we recognize students with specific needs and disabilities? Are we patient enough..

As instructors we do recognize students with specific needs and disabilities in our profession as we promote education to all who would desire knowledge and change.

Do I have the patient for such a task was answered the day I chose the vocation of being an educator! The venture is easy and exciting to understand that knowledge is free but its usage requires hard work and focus in life to watch its growth unfold. The student has the greater patient in waiting for the dream to unfold.

Hi Steven,
You are making a number of excellent points that will benefit newer instructors in the field. Listening is one of the most powerful teaching tools that exist. Thanks for sharing.

The longer I teach--and this will be my 31st year in the classroom--the more I understand the simple wisdom of asking the learner what they need from me in order to help them learn more, faster. Whenever I take the time to sit down with them and listen to their needs and frustrations, the end result is a positive one for both the student and me. Ernest Hemingway famously stated that he had learned a great deal from listening, and that most people don't listen. I agree.

Hi Cecilia,
That is why we need to have a way of assessing how the students are doing in our courses. By knowing that they are struggling and in need of support we can better target the kinds of instructional supports the students should receive.
