Feeling the same frustrations as the students
When students complain about things like lack of supplies, product, space, etc., it becomes difficult as the instructor when you happen to agree with them. What are some ways to handle these types of circumstances?
Hi Jennifer,
Sorry to hear about your situation. This simply should not happen because it places you in such a difficult position. An instructor should not have to apologize for equipment failure. You college could be in a tight spot if a student every complains to the accrediting commission that accredits your college. This is cannot continue or the college is in danger of losing its' accreditation.

We have the same situation at our school. Currently, we have one classroom that at any given time has half of the computers not working/not connected to the internet when the class is dependent on both. It is very frustrating for the instructor as well as the student population and I feel for them. We put in IT requests as required but it happens term after term.
Hi Stacy,
I can really understand your situation. I am currently teaching in a lounge area, people walk through the area on a regular basis, and the only media I have is the overhead projector. All my content is on Powerpoint. I am taking the approach you are. I explained the situation to the administration and they chose not to do anything about it. I am doing the best I can and I explained to my students the situation that I and they are facing. The class has jelled around the content of the course and are engaged in a lot of discussion since they see that I am being challenged by the setting. It is turning into being one of the best phases I have taught because we all have the same problem. The students are constantly looking for ways to make the class better with the limited resources and setting we have. Not a solution but story of how I am working through something that neither the students nor I should have to endure.

I have a situation where there is a technology problem that causes problems every quarter. Students get frustrated with it, and I feel their frustration. As an instructor, I have no control over the technology we are required to use. The school is aware of the problem but still requires the use of the technology. I make the best of it by acknowledging that I am aware of the problems, and I offer what suggestions I can to help students get through it. What else can I do?
Hi Jennifer,
First start with your college administration. These supplies and proper supports have to be provided. To do less is to cheat the students. The accreditation of a college is dependent on the college in providing a proper learning environment, with qualified faculty and sufficient supplies. If the administration will not support you and your request for reasonable teaching support then you may want to consider moving to another school that will provide such support to your students and yourself.
