By knowing a bit more about student and you can focus more directly towards them.

Really good topic.

I agree if I notice the class majority leanrs a certain way I will used it more ofeten

I sometimes get a student who shares to much, so I take a few minutes with them after class to redirect them back to wants being dicussed.

I have the students take a what type of learning am I the first day of class, it only takes about 15 minutes. I also advise them to tes their children.

Kim,
This is so important because you have knowledge of where these students are coming from and how you can provide support to them. You can also connect better with students by having this information.

Give a better way to map instruction in class and lab by helping the learner with a reading skill deficiency that has test anxiety show that physical and tactical skills can help a weaker classroom ability or even vise-versa help the classroom star into a better hands on student.

Gives the needed background for instructor to help manage student learning and discipline in relationship to learning and behavior/ Makes me feel more comfortable in my approach to and from the student.

great idea. thank you

Soneka,
This is a great way to gain insight into the learning preferences of students as well as some of the emotional intelligence the students are bringing to the class. Knowing this enables instructors to more accurately customize instruction and get students engaged in the learning process.

One of the things I always suggest to our faculty if that they administer a learning style quiz to students as well as have 1 on 1's with each knew student in their class. This not only allows the instructor to develop individual understanding of the learning pool but also rapport with the students. The 1 on 1's allow for the student to relay character based information that will be critical to understanding their intrinsic and extrinsic motivations for pursuing their desired outcomes. The instructor can then plan accordingly and is armed with critical data to quickly react to student issues.

Kirk,
I use pretesting in all of my courses so I can get a base line on my incoming students. By having this baseline I can then customize my content and delivery to meet the needs of these students in a personal and engaging way. You are going to like the results you get from using pretesting due to the insight it will give you.

to be able to teach in many different styles and to know exactly what style you need to educate them is very important

As a new instructor I am planning pre-assessments prior to the start of each class to hopefully gain some insight on how each student learns best.

I have found with my students that making sure and communicating what's expected of them and how every day is going to proceed it helps them come in more prepared for class.

Understanding my students' learning styles is a key factor as I plan lessons.Knowing which students need a visual representation, which prefer audio, and which are kinesthetic learners helps me differentiate instruction so all can reach the target goal. Luckily, my classes are usually small so I can discern the learning characteristics of each student early in the course through working with him/her one-on-one or in small groups.

Alan,
Good point and one all instructors need to remember. We should not just use what is easy or the most comfortable for us. We need to use what is helping our students to learn and progress in the course via their different learning preferences.

I have found students learn using different forms of presentation. That is, some prefer reading, others audio, or visual. One needs to plan to present material in various formats to accommodate all learners.

We get such a diversified cross-sections of learning styles, it is important to understand what mode of learning is best for their individual learning mode. This assures success for all of our students.

I am able to be a more effective/versatile Instructor for my students.
