Diego,
The more you know about your students the more accurately you can customize your instructional planning and delivery. What are some ways that you gain information about your students from your students?

Knowing the learners characteristics may help you to set a strategy that impact in a more positive way the learning process.
I also explain several learning styles. My adult students seem to accept and learn from my different options.
Brenda,
I think this is a very good discussion to have because even though your students are adults many of them don't realize that they do in fact have specific learning preferences. By talking about them and you sharing how the course is going to be taught they can gain some insight into how they can prepare and be successful in the course.

I always discuss various learning styles with my students and we talk about all the different learning styles and various ways to learn .
Joseph,
You touched upon a very good point and that is mutual respect. Respect serves as the foundation for rapport and this is such an important part of the student learning process.

Rick,
In what ways does this information serve as a resource?

It creates an atmosphere of mutual respect and trust between the instructor and learner. It lets the learner know that the instructor cares and is interested in the learner.
Knowing which style is best for the learner allows the instructor to explore different ways to modify the material presentation to accommodate the learner’s skill and experience.
It may also present the instructor a different way to present the material to the class
it helps u figure out how you are going to present the information
I find it easier to plan a class session when catering to all learning styles. It keeps it exciting and reinforces the topic as you deliver it in defferent methods. i believe students appreciate this, thus are more successful:)
Sylinda,
This is important as you develop your instructional delivery. The more you know about your students the more accurate you can be in your instructional activities.

An understanding of learner characteristics can be very helpful to the student and instructor. Instructors will have a better understanding of how students will retain information taught to them.
LaTerria,
Good strategy to follow. By appealing to the different learning preferences of your students you are reaching all of them at different times during the class.

I always make sure that I teach to all types of learners. I create lesson plans that will work well for audio, visual, and hands on learners. This is fairly easy to do in a science course.
Understanding learner characteristics is important because it helps me plan the direction I need to take with these individuals. Based on this information, I try to incorporate all mediums in my lectures; visual, audio and written in order to maximize the learning experience for the students.
For whatever the characteristic, having prior knowledge of this should help the instructor be able to adapt the teaching style to maximize the ability of the student(s) in order to assimilate and translate the material from classroom to field applications.
Zoe,
What are some ways you do this with your students.

it helps you relate to your students and reach them on an instructional level
Katherine,
Good strategy to follow as you are making them aware of the different channels through which they can receive and learn new information. The more they know about themselves the more engaged they can become.

Terizian,
Good point and one we need to remember as we do our instructional planning. This is one of the challenges we face since most of us have such a wide age and experience range among our students.
