understanding student characteristics

I agree with the age difference and how the students work harder when they are older then the younger age students. I feel that no matter what age you are, the student needs a good support system to help them. It is also important to have supprot from there family as well as support from the instructor. I try to help the students that have english lanuage differences because I dont want them to feel anymore stress then classes can already be.

Hi Mitchell,
This is such a good point. Many students feel entitled to receive high grades without doing the work. Our culture in many ways tries to remove competition from everything that is done but competition is what drives most individuals. The day we graduate we are in competition with numerous others for the job we want. In order to win that competition we must have the knowledge and skills it takes to do the job. The students have to understand this concept. That is why, as you say, we spend a lot of our time teaching life skills as well as the topic.

The vast majority feel as if they are'owed' simply based on the cultural acceptance of constant entitlement without having to be held responsible. This is present in both young students as well as those on the more mature side of life. This presents obvious challanges to an instructor. We must manage curriculum, and teach life skills in many circumstances.

Older students have a stronger sense of responsability , also they feel they are owed a great education for their money.
