Understanding your target audience

It is very important to take the necessary time to understand your students, where they come from, who they are, what they want out of the class and how they learn best. Then, design the delivery method of the content so it custom fits that specific target audience. For example, some students will learn best from reading and taking a quiz, while others want you to explain and show them, and others need to just do it for themselves.

Hi Peter,
Right you are about the challenges of being an instructor. On the positive side it is a lot of fun to watch students grow and learn in their field. With that in mind what do you do to help you understand the learning preferences of your students when they come into your classes?
Gary

Understanding the students' preferred learning type is critical. It's tough to be all things to all students all the time, which is what makes being an instructor so challenging.

I think it is necessary for instructors to understand their students. When you make the connection with them, they will feel more comfortable with you. Most students in design are visual learners but doing different methods helps as well.
