Prepatory work for older students
Does anyone have some reading material that I could suggest be read by my older adult students to help combat their anxiety and fear of returning to school after being away from the learning environment for such a long time?
Nothing brings success like success. But as a math instructor, I have several books related to math anxiety. An unusual number of students identify math as a reason they quit college earlier or didn't try college at all. Barnes and Nobel have a book "Where Do I Put the Decimal Point", Cengage has one called "Conquering Math Anxiety". (ISBN 0534386342) The most useful part seems to be that the reader can identify with the feelings that go with math anxiety. By validating the feelings the reader feels less alone.
