Incorrect Assessment of skills
I have an online student who dominates the chat box and announces regularly that she is an overachiever. She accesses her skills way beyond where her ability is. She seems to ignore her weaknesses and though I don't want to dampen her spirit, I do want her to see she is creating too many errors and has not progressed as much as she thinks she has. What can I do to keep her motivated but still have her grounded in reality?
I have a student that does this also. In the classroom setting, she announces that she has completed all course material. This is inacurrate. I believe she makes statements like this to make the other students believe that she is more skilled than they are.
I agree that it is important to give positive feedback for what is being done well, but also let the student know what aspects she still needs to work on. Good luck~!
I would aknowledge her strenghts, but also make her aware that when we make mistakes we must acknowledge them in order to learn
You can encourage her to stop every once and a while to evaluate how well her actions are suited to the requirements of the assignments. Self-assessment and self-evaluation are the hallmarks of good learners and good professionals so maybe you can coach it in those terms?
Hi Kathleen,
Talk with her privately and express your concerns about certain areas of her performance. Since you are teaching online you need to craft your word selection carefully to show her how she can continue to improve while overcoming some of the holes she has in her abilities. You might ask her to do a research project or something like that to give you a format for giving her the needed feedback while still letting her be a bit of an overachiever.
