student confidence

I try to raise the confident level in all students whom i taught,or may be teaching. Confidence brings motivation and good character.

I believe "encouragement brings confidence"!!! By bringing encouragement into the classroom students seem to gain confidence. I can not believe how powerful an encouraging word is to my adult students. I see such changes in students that may be lacking in self confidence. "You can do this"!!!

raising the cofidence level of my students has always been key to me and I've found it increases the students focus on the material

Hi Tammie,
Great last sentence. It really captures much of what we do as instructors. The power of self esteem is great for personal and career development. It helps the students to capture a vision of their future.
Gary

I agree with the students lacking confidence because they feel less competent. However, further in this discussion someone mentions self esteem of the students too. I have seen many times that students come in to school looking for something or someone to help them with life skills as well as the knowledge they need for their chosen career. By building some self esteem within them, they can be more competent because they have the confidence.

Hi Rob,
I see that we have different views, now, thank you for pointing this out in your reply to me.
I respectfully disagree with you and will clarify my view; and then move on. I believe in all the interrelatedness of the process of acquiring knowledge by the use of instructional techniques (either by projection or instructor modeling) as a way of complimenting the ways in which the students are, as you say, (studying and learning) on their own, and by having done this, it would, then, booster their self confidence.
So long and enjoy your thread

I agree with your points, however I was talking about building up the Students competence, by studying and reading, in order to build up their confidence in their abilities to do well in the course. How you project yourself to the students is a totally different subject.

Hi Rosalva,
Good point concerning how we project ourselves to our students. We have to be aware that we are always "on stage" even when we are walking down the hall.
Gary

I have heard of "competence builds confidence" but recently a professor I know spoke of building self-esteem with gaining confidence, and I used to think self-esteem and confidence was the same concept. I think teachers project "self-confidence" in their body language and students are always sizing up their instructors so we need to be careful of what we project.

I like the old saying, "competence builds confidence".
In my experience, when students lack confidence it is usually a function of not understanding the material. This is usually tied to not putting in the necessary effort of reading the chapter, doing the homework. In these times of electronic information, the students have ample resources at their disposal, but still have limited time.
