Age diversity

It can be difficult to use examples that everyone can relate to.

I like to use examples from the current headlines. We have fun with our discussions about some of the current pop culture icons, and even compare them to the past. Generally, all learners are at least familiar with the examples.

you have to try to find a happy-medium that all age groups in the classroom can relate to.

I agree sometimes several examples are necessary

Patina,

You are absolutely correct. Students who aren't engaged find it easy to fade into the background and coast on auto pilot. This is why I try to engage students by relating common intersts and experiences.

Hi Karla,
We share a similar approach. I try to involve students based on their background and experience. However, I try to use different students in various ways throughout the course, as they sometimes tend to shadow the course if they feel they have nothing of value to add to the course.

Hi Karla,
You are right about how letting the students talk about things they are comfortable with really helps them to get settled into the course while you are identifying where they are in terms of experience and learning potential. This helps them to get settled in and ready to move forward in the course.

I begin my courses with introductions. This gives me an opportunity to assess the make up of the class pertaining to age, work experience, and education level.

I use these assessments as a way to engage students and directly relate the topics we cover to their experiences whenever possible. This also helps to draw the quieter ones out, because I have found that most students don't mind discussing things they are familiar with.

Hi Michael,
What are some strategies that you use to try and identify examples that everyone can relate to?
Thanks.
Gary

You are correct, find out what they like.

I agree, I find that getting them to give some details of thier life experiences that I can then try to use a fitting example sometimes works well.

I agree, sometimes you have to use more than one.
