age problem in classroom setting

adult student feel bad when they feel in desadvantage to yonger students

you can always encourage the older students to use their experiences to help the younger students in the classroom.. everybody wins

We all have to remember as adults that we did not arrive at this level of maturity from birth it was lifelong learning experiences therefore we must be patient as the younger student faces some growing pain. Yes at the adult learner experience as long as it tolerable.

This maybe true but one must always remember that learning is an individual task to prepare them for future success in their new choosen career field. It become survival over pride and fear.

My experiences with adult learners is that they are much more motivated to do the required work and study. When is classes with younger learners they seem irritated with the maturity level of the younger students - esp. when the younger kids are talking on breaks about their weekend activities. I have not experienced much difficulty with adults/older students as of yet.

Lorraine,
With students like this I take a small segment of the course and have them complete a project or activity that will give them success. It is short term and basic so they won't fail if they put forth the effort. With this small success I give them another segment for additional success and before long they are doing well in the course as a result of their developing self confidence. The key is to get them to try and then help them achieve success.

I have had older student has demonstrate or fell they have a clear disadvantage to the younger student because of age and a fear of not retaining what is learned. What encouragement can be given when this is clearly not the issue?
