My understanding of adult learners
I have experienced some adult learners only want to have their own way, agenda and outcome in class room settings.
Some have a hard time with rules, structure and plan old instructions; sometimes this can be one of the greatest battles.
Sandra,
Thank you for this example of how you have had and are continuing to have success with older students. They need to be supported at the early stages of the course so they can start to enjoy some success and build confidence in their abilities.

Sometimes I've found older students a bit rigid in their learning preferences, especially in more creative classes. I find if I take the time to emphasize the reasons behind the learning activity and provide encouragement and assistance they will begin to overcome the fear of trying something new and loosen up a bit. The fear of being in a classroom takes a while to overcome. And, newer forms of teaching and learning activites takes a bit of getting used to for an adult student who has been out of school for a number of years. The adult learner sometimes has to learn to learn again in a variety of different modes. With good instruction I find that most students end up enjoying the process.
I agree adult teaching older student can be challenging and rewarding at the same time. Those students are v\bringing and so much life experience with them where the instructor can learn forms them as well.
MICHELLE,
Been there and have had them as students. Yes, they are challenges which helps me to reach back into my "tool kit" of instructional strategies and try to reach such students. When I do it is such a great feeling to know I have helped them move closer to their career goals, even when they have been a challenge. Don't get them all but those I do make it worth all the effort.
