Adult learners
I have noticed that the adult learners are really focused in the class, filled with energy and are looking for learning a new skill and applying them to their life, they also are rich in their life experiences and they share it with us and this have helped out in delivering the information in a practical ways.
I find that adult learners also get very frustruated with younger students who are not as committed so, my classroom management varies depending on the age make up of the class.
Jeri,
This is the model I follow with my students as well. I get the results you list and as a side benefit both generation start to develop an appreciation for what each group can contribute to the class.

A mixture of young students and adult learners is a challenging and interesting mix. I find that the non-traditional adult learners are more self-directed than some of the younger students. By creating working groups of both types of students I have found that they very much compliment each other, learn from each other by sharing their experiences and goals and it helps the non-self directed students to become more structured.
Mandy,
Good point and one that you are sharing with your students. Yes, success now as an adult learner really does make a different in the future and they need to realize this as they progress through their courses.

I am an Adult learner there is one main difference that I found within myself. I look at my education differently than when I first starting at 18. I know that what I am learning will impact my life and the quality of my life. I also know that it will help me to slowly continue to climb the ladder. I hope to inspire my students that it doesn't matter what age you are education is power.
Rhonda,
I agree about the value of having older students in classes. I really seek their input because they have some many varied life experiences that can and do add to the course.

I seem to always have an older student that has been there and done that. It makes our discussion boards so much more interesting. Older students bring texture and hope to our online classes.
Eric,
With your dual roles you are able to target your instruction so that you meet the learning preferences of your students in an effective and efficient manner. This is a great asset for your students.

I being both a teacher and a older student can relate to this head on. I feel that as I learn in class I know right where to apply those instuctions.
Juan,
Adult learners are a great resource as a result of their life experiences but you are right about them feeling at times challenged by younger students. I form learning groups where I mix the two sectors and then they work together on case studies and problems. This method really helps them to learn to work with and respect each other.

Happy,
I love having older students in my classes for the reasons you state. They are a great resource upon which I call throughout the course.

Adult Leaners are very eager to learn and put there life experinces to play and use. But sometimes they get discourge when there are younger class mates.
