college success

new students should try and resolve any issues they have early on. in regards to situations that might affect their success, like transportaion, childcare and work schedule. it is possible to manage school, personal life and career.

Mabel,
What I have found to work best is to set down with these folks and talk about what you cover in your classes and what level the students need to be to enjoy success in your course. Also, have a discussion on where the students you are getting are missing the mark in terms of academic preparation or what ever is missing. Seek to find a better match between the incoming students and your courses. Admissions will listen to this because student retention has to be at a certain level to keep accreditation. So the more accurate the selection and placement of new students is the higher the retention rate is going to be for the college. This is the kind of information that grabs their attention.

How do we encourage "Admissions" to direct students to the proper resources PRIOR to their start date, so that this issues ARE resolved when they begin classes?

Dawanna,
Good point. If these things are taken care of prior to class starting the student then can concentrate on being a student and passing the courses. Many students as you well know let these outside challenges build up to the point it is almost impossible for them to get control of while being a student.
