The students reason for enrolling is their motivation, learning that and playing off that for everyone in the class helps make that personal connection. When the student feels that connection, they are more able to intake the learning.

So I can plan around their reasons.

It will help me to identify with them more; knowing where they came from; where they want to go; and possibly how to help them get there.

By knowing the students reasons, it helps to be able to plan the class instruction better. Some students want just the basics. Give them the lessons and the material and that is it. Other students want to be entertained or spoon fed exactly what they need to get an A in the class. Still others want to know everything now, whether they need it or not. By knowing their reasons for coming to class, a teacher can plan for these types of students.

It will help me learn my meathod of how I teach the material needed. I have two dyslexia students now and I do more hands on with the class to get them involved. Its easier than reading the material and they learn.

By knowing and understanding why students are enrolled will help me as the instructor to provide useful and meaningful content.

Hi Kevin,
This is such valuable information to have because you can adapt and build your instructional delivery from this knowledge. The more you know the more targeted you can be.
Gary

Knowing why students have enrolled in the program helps you to make a connection with students. It also provides motivation for completing the couse and the program. Students who can see that you care about them and why they are enrolled will know you will help them be successful

Understanding the actual reason for enrollment aids an instructor in motivating, supporting as-well-as teaching a diverse student population.

Hi Mary,
Right on with your understanding of what you are to do as an instructor. These students are clear on their goals and it is our responsibility to provide instruction in that vein.
Gary

Most of my older students are there because they are changing their field of study to gain and seek employment. Their needs are usually crucial to their family's wellbeing and are committed learners. As an instructor I need to make sure that my teaching is relevant to the subject matter and shows relevance to their goals.

Knowing my students reasons for enrolling allows me to know more about what type of student they will be. It is also useful when I am preparing class lectures. I try to motivate all students and show them that each one of them can be successful, they just have to stay committed to their goals.

Hi Jaimie,
I like to know their reasons as well. Knowing them really helps me to target how I will relate to their needs and provide them support.
Gary

knowing the reason for enrollment allows me to identify their goals and motivation. I could motivate them to become successful by mofifying learning exercises and providing examples of people who have gone through the same experiences and become successful.

Hi Lana,
Right on with your example and strategy. Clear expectations are critical. This way the class can get off to a good start, the students frustrations levels are lowered and respect can be generated for both the instructor and the students.
Gary

By knowing the reasons - therefore the expectations - for why a student is enrolling, allows an instructor to be able to clarify what expectations the instructor will be able to meet and what expectations the instructor has of the students. Just as when you go into a pizza parlor, you expect to be able to order and receive a pepperoni pizza - you should not expect to go to a steak house and be able to order a pepperoni pizza and have one delivered. Clarifing expections is the best way to set the structure for your course.

Hi Cathleen,
Good way to approach your students. You are customizing instruction on a mass basis. This helps the students to be able to personalize the instruction and see how to achieve their career goals.
Gary

Our students are so diverse in age, background, motivation and talent. This provides quite a challenging scenerio. When I find out why a student has enrolled and what he hopes the outcome will be, it helps me focus on how I can help keep him motivated and supportive without falsely inflating his dream.

I ask each student at the beginning of the class why they are here and what type of vehicles intrest them and if there here to work at a dealer or open their own shop. Once I know this I will teach my class using examples of those particular vehicles and work enviroments. This has always kept students involved in class descussion as well as kept motivation to do well high.

I could adjust the couse content to make sure it meets the student's expectations.
